Visual Arts

Northlands is deeply passionate about placing value on the arts and on nurturing a love for art and creativity in our learners. It was Pablo Picasso who said “Every child is an artist. The problem is remaining an artist when they grow up.”

Creativity is a superpower, and once it’s unlocked, it really can be limitless.

The beautiful thing about Art, particularly at primary school, is that there are very few strict “rules”. It's mostly about exploring and playing, trying new things, and pushing boundaries so we can grow as creative people. Working in the arts helps children to develop creative problem-solving skills and can often present difficult concepts visually, making them easier to understand. This has been very evident in the cross-curricular application that is evident across our grades. What our learners are encouraged to create is awe-inspiring.

The benefits of participating in art at school go so far beyond what we can immediately see. Art helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, as well as inventiveness and creativity. It allows space for self-expression and builds self-awareness in learners, and it really is an integral part of the development of our children. That is why it is a highly valued part of the Northlands Primary curriculum.
