Junior Primary

The Junior Primary department at Northlands is a thriving, happy place where children are encouraged to perform to the best of their ability in a home away from home environment.

There are 15 classes with dedicated, enthusiastic teachers who teach with skill and compassion. There are also specialists for the following subjects: Afrikaans, isiZulu, Music, Computer studies, Coding and Robotics as well as Physical Education.

At Northlands we follow the CAPS programme, focusing on the whole child. We have a dedicated Academic Support teacher who assists children who may need extra help. We also offer school-based counselling services for those learners who may need emotional support and work on a referral system with those learners who need professional intervention.

We remain part of the “big” school, but we maintain our Junior Primary identity by the following activities:

  • Our own Junior Primary assembly which is geared to this age group. The children are rewarded with certificates for effort, attitude, good work and sports among other things.
  • We have our own gala and sports day.
  • The Grade 3s have sport festivals where they compete against other schools. Grade 2 learners have the opportunity to take part in mini cricket in Terms 1 and 4.
  • Northlands also hosts Guppy Galas during the swimming season where our Grade 1s and 2s swim against other schools. Our heated pool allows for these galas to take place, even in the cooler months.
  • The Grade 1 and 2 children have a chance to improve their sporting skills on a Saturday morning during our Mini Sport sessions. Mum and dad are invited to assist with coaching at these sessions.
  • In Terms 2 and 3, there are netball, rugby and hockey festivals where they get the chance to practise the skills they have learnt in a competitive environment.
  • Our Grade 3s have a comprehensive Extra mural programme and compete against other schools in all sporting codes.
  • The Grade 3s have the opportunity to be part of the Junior Primary choir as well as the Junior Band and attend creative art lessons as an extra mural activity.
  • We have our own special functions such as an Art evening, family picnics and Spur evenings for our JP families. All our junior primary learners are invited to attend Superhuman Club where they can learn more about religion.

After school we offer Aftercare for Grade 1, 2 and 3. Here the children are supervised, given a chance to play and the opportunity to do their homework.
